Welcome to The Festival of Food & Farming!

Get ready to immerse yourself in all things Food and Farming. Cyndi O’Meara purchased the Changing Habits Farm nearly a decade ago. As a nutritionist, she was concerned about the quality of food. Since the purchase, she and her family’s learning curve has been steep, being the custodian of the land that, in turn, produces food for family and community.

Cyndi wants to give 50 people the opportunity to fast-track and learn what she has taken years to amass by trial and error. Her farm now works as a well-managed ecosystem providing abundance for all who visit. She uses Biodynamics, Natural Sequence Farming, Syntropics, Cell grazing, poultry husbandry, multi-species pastures, worm farming, and composting, to name a few. Whether you want to learn one of these modalities or soak in everything, this festival is for you. Learn from the experts who have been instrumental in transforming a chemically farmed land into what it is today.

Biodynamic farming is a holistic and sustainable approach to agriculture that is based on the principles of Rudolf Steiner, an Austrian philosopher and scientist. Biodynamic farming emphasizes the interconnectedness of soil, plants, animals, and the cosmos, and seeks to create a self-sustaining and harmonious ecosystem. Biodynamic farmers use a variety of practices, such as composting, crop rotation, and the use of natural preparations, to improve soil fertility and plant health, while minimising the use of synthetic inputs. Biodynamic farming also involves following a planting and harvesting calendar based on lunar cycles and other astrological events. Proponents of biodynamic farming claim that it can produce healthier crops, higher yields, and more resilient ecosystems, while reducing the environmental impact of agriculture.

Introduction to Biodynamics with Hamish Mackay & Charlie Arnott will be held on Day 1 & 2.

Syntropic farming offers a sustainable and regenerative approach to agriculture, which can help to address issues such as soil degradation and food security. Syntropic farming involves creating a balanced and resilient agro-ecosystem, where each plant species interacts with others to create mutually beneficial relationships. This leads to a reduction in the need for pesticides and fertilisers and improves the overall health of the soil., improving the nutrition of the plant.

The method has been gaining popularity in recent years due to its ability to produce high yields while reducing the environmental impact of agriculture.

Introduction to Syntropics with Rob Wyborn will be held on Day 4

Natural Sequence Farming (NSF) is a land restoration method that aims to restore the natural water cycle and soil health of degraded landscapes, such as farms and grazing lands. NSF involves a range of techniques that work together to improve soil health and increase water retention in the landscape.

NSF has been shown to be effective in restoring degraded landscapes and improving the productivity of farms and grazing lands. It has been adopted by farmers and land managers in Australia and other parts of the world as a sustainable alternative to conventional farming practices.

Natural Sequence Farming with Stuart Andrews will be held on Day 3.

Regenerative farming is an approach to agriculture that seeks to improve the health and vitality of soil, water, and ecosystems, while also producing food and fibre. It focuses on building soil health through practices such as cover cropping, crop rotation, composting, reduced tillage, and the integration of livestock. These practices work together to improve soil structure, increase water retention, reduce erosion, and enhance nutrient cycling.

Regenerative farming also emphasises the use of natural pest management techniques and the preservation of biodiversity. By prioritising soil health, regenerative farming aims to create resilient and sustainable agricultural systems that can adapt to changing environmental conditions and support the long-term health of both people and the planet.

Introduction to Regenerative Farming with Brogan O’Meara will be held on Day 4

INTRODUCTION TO BIODYNAMICS
with Hamish Mackay & Charlie Arnott

Join Hamish Mackay and Charlie Arnott

An Introduction to Biodynamics brings together the art and science of agriculture, teaching participants how biodynamic preparations contribute to the soil food web and introduce practical aspects needed to apply biodynamics:

  • The life of the soil
  • Creating fertility in your soil
  • Managing your natural resources
  • Practical use of the biodynamic preparations Developing risk management: Weeds, Pests, Diseases
  • Meeting climate change challenges: Drought, Flood, Carbon sequestration

Applicable to home gardeners, horticulture, small intensive cropping systems, broad acre farming and animal production, if you would you like to learn how biodynamic practice is different from organic gardening and permaculture methods then this course is for you.
** This workshop will provide you with the foundation to attend a follow on Biodynamics Preparation Making Workshop. At the Biodynamic Preparation Making Workshops held each Spring and Autumn you will learn how to make season specific biodynamic preparations.

DAY 3

1st September 2023

10am – 3pm

FIELD DAY ON NATURAL SEQUENCE FARMING
with Stuart Andrews

Stuart Andrews from Tarwyn Park Training and Foraged Foods

Natural Sequence Farming (NSF) starts with plants and water. The key to Natural Sequence Farming is that plants manage water, which builds the landscape. NSF is about understanding the landscape’s natural function and the natural sequences that manage everything, then using that knowledge to better manage your landscape. You will learn the 5 pillars of NSF in theory and practice.

1. Slow The Flow
2. Let All Plants Grow
3. Careful Where The Animals Go
4. Filtration Is A Must Know
5. Return To The Top To Recycle The Lot

With NSF, you can restore your landscape’s function, increase your farms’ productivity and profitability, build your natural capital and play your part in managing our climate. Stuart is on a mission; he wants to see creative, productive farms and allotments, build better landscapes, restore the ecology, and create profitable enterprises wherever you are on your regenerative journey, all by starting to implement Natural Sequence Farming.

Includes lunch, snacks, coffee & tea

DAY 4

2nd September 2023

9am – 4pm

INTRODUCTION TO REGENERATIVE FARMING AND SYNTROPICS
with Brogan O’Meara and Rob Wyborn

Brogan and Rob both work on the Changing Habits Farm. Brogan manages the day-to-day workings of the farm attending to the soil and animals, while Rob creates and manages the syntropics. Their knowledge and work have transformed the farm from a monoculture of grass to the diversity it has today. 1000’s of food-bearing and companion trees have been planted, and the implementation of biodynamics, syntropics, and all the principles of Regenerative Farming is evident as you walk through the landscape of the farm.

You will learn

  • Syntropics – using Australian natives and others, mulching, chopping and dropping and harvesting, and commercial growing of ginger and garlic.
  • Worm Farming
  • Composting
  • Cell grazing
  • Poultry management for pests and fertility of the land
  • Soil ecology
  • Wholistic management
  • The Integration of Biodynamics and Natural Sequence Farming

It will be a day of theory and practical, but most of all, it will be your chance to see how all the systems you have learnt through The Festival of Food and Farming come together in a bounty of food and beauty. We are so excited to show you what you can create on your own plot of land.

Includes lunch, snacks, coffee & tea
