Functional Health Canberra’s Game Changing Approach
By Melissa Kovacevic

As the Founder of Functional Health Canberra, I am an accredited Functional Nutrition Consultant and a Clinical EFT Practitioner (Emotional Freedom Techniques). EFT is a powerful stress management tool sometimes referred to as “tapping” or emotional acupuncture without needles.

My mission is to educate and inspire others to live an optimal healthy life. I am not about fads, low calorie or restrictive diets but believe in nourishing our body with delicious nutrient-dense whole foods.

My previous studies taught me the fundamentals of nutrition, and then when I studied with the Nutrition Academy I was able to gain a broader appreciation of health. I was taught the latest breakthroughs in epigenetics, functional testing and gut health and guided by the philosophy of vitalism and concepts of giving our body the right tools, from nature to heal and thrive. I have carried this philosophy with me into my own life and business.

Incorporating EFT with nutrition has been a gamechanger for me personally; and for my clients. More often than not, I was finding the resistance most clients face when it came to health, was due to self-limiting beliefs and negative patterns of behaviour.

EFT helps my clients get past these beliefs. Sometimes we have fears that remain in our subconscious minds and EFT may help let go of the emotions surrounding certain experiences, allowing our body to heal. It has helped my clients resolve a range of issues including workplace stress and anxiety, food cravings and emotional eating patterns as well as improving athletic performance.

When it comes to emotional eating, sometimes we have emotional anchors linking eating to positive feelings, or we eat to shut down feelings altogether. EFT is proven to reduce stress in the body by at least 24% and gives you a safe way to feel your emotions and break unhelpful behaviours.

I have found EFT to be a phenomenal tool, when combined with Functional Nutrition really helps my clients achieve their Functional Health Goals.

Too often we take for granted some aspects of life and consider them the default (such as having energy, being pain free, thinking clearly, doing things you love), never thinking that we have to work for and nurture them. When we don't nurture them with good sleep, exercise, food, community and more, we realise just how fundamental they really are.

It all sounds complicated, but to your body it's an inherent and automatic part of the process, its innate! We can use language to understand what's going on in our bodies and explain the magic of the system that keeps us alive.

If your goals this year include managing your weight, don't turn to laboratory-made shakes, make your own! Cyndi suggests blending an egg and some fruit together for a protein boost, or high-satiety fruit likes apples, bananas and avocados blended with Greek yoghurt and water. Low ingredients and high nutrition is ideal if you're looking to chase good health.
