Our Government’s Health Priorities

I’m 66, I take no medications and I never had, I have no chronic disease, I’m capable of hiking with a full backpack for 20km a day. I love challenging myself in trail run competitions out in nature and I don’t vaccinate against the flu nor pneumococcal nor shingles (all free for me as said in the letters from Medicare) due to the ingredients and the lack of safety and efficacy in most vaccines.  I’m particular about the ingredients in my food, so of course I’m particular about things that can be injected into me.

Can We Trust Health Standards?

Can We Trust Health Institutions? Flawed science, institutional corruption and incentives rewarding disease management is what is making us sick — not willpower. Since 1982 when the dietary guidelines advocated low fat, margarine, low salt, breakfast cereals, 11 serving of grains, vegetable oils, calorie counting and ultra-processed foods, the health of Australians is worsening.  90% […]

Defining Functional Nutrition

What Is Functional Nutrition? Functional Nutrition doesn’t treat the symptom — it looks at the root cause.  Functional Nutrition is about individualised nutrition plans, environmental and lifestyle changes required for the whole person, not just the symptom. Functional Nutrition is an integrative approach that requires time and participation by the client.  It is not a […]

Can Diet Help Parkinson’s Disease?

With roughly 50 new cases diagnosed daily, it’s now Australia’s second most common neurological disease behind dementia.
Professor Simon Lewis was discussing the disease as well as taking questions from the listeners.

It was interesting listen.  I wanted to call up and ask what he thought of diet and Parkinsons, but driving made it impossible.  Not long after that thought, someone called up and relayed the fact that the ketogenic diet helped people with seizures, perhaps it could help with Parkinson’s. Professor Simon Lewis dismissed it, saying they were two different maladies.
I beg to differ.

We Have Our Health Priorities All Wrong

When the new QLD Chief Health Officer makes a priority in health that is not even a priority, the health of its citizens is doomed.  Let me explain. Last September I had the chance to visit and work in an orphanage and community in Uganda. I was only there 5 days, but it gave me […]

Meeting Mila from Croatia

Originally posted on Changing Habits 2017 It’s funny where life takes you and how it puts you in the right place at the right time, you just have to be open to it. I’ve had a tiring last couple of days.  Starting with a long flight to Philadelphia from San Francisco, dinners, rehearsals, meeting people, […]

Are Health Star Ratings Mandatory?

Health Star Rating is now Mandatory in Australia. The Dietitians of Australia are beyond pleased that the Food Ministers have greenlighted the mandate for the Health Star Rating (HSR). The Dietitians of Australia call themselves the leading voice in nutrition and dietetics. If this is leading the way by giving 5 HSR to ultra-processed foods […]

Losing Weight ≠ Getting Healthy

I was at a party recently. There were many women there around my age. This is the time when the middle-age spread sets in, and for many at the party, it had begun. There were also complaints of sore knees and hips, as well as not having enough energy and other maladies. Some of the […]

Cyndi’s TEDTalk – Have you Seen It Yet?

Cyndi and TEDX

Sometimes when you chat to people about their health, they often say that they can’t change because of their genes replying ‘My Mum’s overweight, so that’s why I’m heavy too, it’s in my genes’ or ‘My dad had a heart attack at 45, so now I’m prone to heart disease too.’ Some people just accept […]

Protein Powders – Not Just Another Supplement Story

header image; protein powder

For many years people have asked me what is the best protein powder on the market. I found this really hard to answer as I was dubious about  many of them, especially considering most of them had high amounts of artificial ingredients, fillers, additives, colours, flavours and synthetic nutrients. When I did find a pure protein powder I was concerned as to how they were made.

Mental Health is Out of Control – Time To Change the Paradigm

In Australia between 6-8% of children and 5% of adults have ADHD. That’s 1 in 15 children are diagnosed with ADHD. It is thought that a significant number of people with ADHD in Australia remain undiagnosed. Why is this happening and what can we do?

A Family Legacy of Longevity  I was in New Zealand recently.  I went specifically to my aunt’s 100th birthday.  My aunt is mentally incredibly sharp with a memory better than most people, she is happy and still has purpose for living.  Physically, she still gets around albeit with a walker.  I hadn’t seen her for […]
